A Week in the Life as an Accounts Junior

Normally my first day at a new job is full of stress and anxiety at what awaits, however I felt pretty serene on my way into the Accountability office for the first time. I think it was because the interview had been so nice, and I’d got such a nice vibe from Rosie and Tanya that I was more just looking forward to meeting everyone. Or maybe it was the totally lush environment the office is tucked away in - it feels like a quaint village with beautifully tended gardens everywhere, and wonderful views out over the loch. Not at all what I’m used to in city centre finance jobs!

My first week was great, I was particularly impressed with the development plans which clearly indicate exactly what responsibilities each role has, and exactly what the progression is throughout the various levels within the business. As someone who has come from large financial institutions where how to progress is extremely murky, this was a breath of fresh air. Next impressive thing was that everyone in the company arranged individual meet and greet sessions with me in my first week. It was really refreshing to see that everyone cared enough to take the time out to say hi and find out a little bit about me.

I’m a big fan of animals and the outdoors so one of the things I was really looking forward to about the job was the locale, and it doesn’t disappoint. I’m a big believer in the power of stepping away from your desk and making sure you take at least thirty minutes to forget about the work and unwind, and there’s nowhere better for that than here with two huge managed gardens in one direction, and some community managed land in the other.

There are local cats, dogs, geese. bees, and even chickens around - and the occasional grouse if you’re coming through the park. On my lunch breaks I’ve made friends with crows and met the locals:

In week two I really started getting stuck into the meat and tatties of the work, learning about a few of the clients we work with and starting to complete the regular tasks that help keep those businesses accounts ticking over. I very much enjoyed how hands on the work felt - you’re getting a glimpse into the day-to-day of a business and the people responsible for running it. I’m really looking forward to getting to go into some of these businesses and meet the people whose names I’ve seen so many times, and met “virtually” via emails.
