A Week in the Life as an Accounts Junior: Vol 2

So it’s been several weeks since I started at Accountability Edinburgh, time to catch up my fans on everything that’s been going on!

I’ve settled into a nice routine in the office I feel - I’ve just recently got a bike for the first time in about a quarter of a century and have been enjoying riding to work in the summer sun. Of course, the summer sun comes with additional intrigue in the shape of the occasional wasp that comes to investigate the office… a few times a week you’re liable to see me sprinting for the door as I flee the buzzing interloper. Hey, it’s all exercise! Got to keep in shape, especially now my glamour shots have hit the website…

The local environment continues to offer up some wonderful surprises as I recently met the local monarchy and her consort:

Work wise my day to day consists of managing the purchases bookkeeping for a number of our clients. So I’ll be checking through the inbox looking for invoices & statements and making sure they’re all up to scratch before entering them into our accounting systems and then subsequently reconciling the bank account when the invoices are paid. It’s genuinely interesting as it gives me an insight into how these businesses function, and every day I get to see an invoice from some supplier that makes me go huh, I hadn’t even considered that a business would need x or y. So I feel like I’m not only learning the work, but also learning more each day about how businesses run, which is extremely rewarding.

Looking to the horizon, I should hopefully be starting my AAT level 6 course soon which I’m particularly looking forward to. One of the primary reasons for leaving my previous line of work to come to Accountability was the prospect of getting to learn the fundamentals of accounting and build up my knowledge from the ground up. What better way than going back to school? I’m also really looking forward to going into one of our clients soon - they have a wonderful outdoor space and I’m excited to explore the surroundings and see what the business is like up close. Plus I get to meet the names from my inbox face to face which is a real treat; I love building relationships with colleagues and clients so getting to chat in person (especially given the last couple of years) is something I really value.

All in all I’ve very much enjoyed my time thus far at Accountability, every single person who I’ve worked with has been extremely competent and a pleasure to talk to. A tricky thing to balance in new jobs is how to ask for help without feeling like you’re taking too much time away from a more experienced colleague who is very busy. That hasn’t been an issue for me at all for the first time in my working life, as everyone who I’ve been learning from has been excellent at showing me the ropes and making it abundantly clear that I should ask as many questions as possible. A real testament to the ethos here, always making sure to do the best by our clients - it’s not just a line! I’ve seen it in action!

Anyway time for me to go, I think I hear a wasp…
